CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Josh was true to his word and took care of everything.

When he arrived at my doorstep at just after five a.m. with coffee and croissants, I nearly proposed. I wasn't used to seeing this time of morning. Was it morning? Or was it still technically night time if the sun hadn't come up yet? Regardless, words were beyond me and I consumed the coffee and croissants gratefully before falling asleep again for the hour drive to our ferry crossing. It meant my car conversation cards weren't required, but I did wake up feeling a little brighter even when covered in croissant crumbs.

"We're on next," Josh said, checking his watch and eyeing the cars lined up ahead of us.

I nodded, not quite sure what to say. I had only ever talked to Josh about topics relating to the company I worked for being investigated. I was about to get on a ferry with a man for two hours and I had no idea what to say.

After much waiting and watch-checking with no movement, Josh asked, "So, how did the rest of your babysitting evening go?"

I realised he was nervous too as he kept his eyes on the ferry gate. Perhaps he had never been on a ferry before. Maybe he didn't know what was going to happen and it made him anxious.

I shook off my post-carb and coffee slumber and sat up. "This can take a while. We’ll go up that ramp there and someone will point us where to park. Then we can go up the top for the trip. Or stay in the car, some people do." I sat forward in my seat scanning the area. "There's normally someone checking tickets at the car..."

"Yup, got it. I did some research last night when I was booking the tickets. I am now an expert in ferry travel and where to find the cheapest tickets, I might add. I thought we might go up the top for the trip, if that's okay. They have a cafe on-board and I could really do with another coffee." He stretched as much as he could in a cramped rental and then sat forward as we were waved through.

I nodded and snuggled back into my seat, marvelling at what I felt. Total relaxation. This must be what other people felt like when they were with me. When they didn't need to think about anything because the other person had it all in hand. I was amazed my brain wasn’t pushing the panic button more. Every time I thought of a detail—like Did they take cash at the cafe?—my brain quietly handballed it on. Josh would take care of that. I started to wonder if he had laced my coffee.

Settling ourselves on the deck with hot drinks-turns out the cafe took cash and card-I felt sublimely happy. There was nothing for me to do except sit on a boat and sip a coffee with a fairly delish man next to me. I sighed.

"Something to sigh about?"

"No, just a sigh of contentment.
